Why Early Voting Matters — and What North Carolinians Need to Know

As election seasons unfold, making your voice heard doesn’t have to wait until Election Day. In North Carolina, early in-person voting is a powerful tool that gives eligible voters more flexibility, access and time to participate in shaping our communities and our future.

What Is Early Voting?
Early voting is an in-person voting option before Election Day that allows registered voters to cast their ballots at any early voting site in their county. This contrasts with traditional Election Day voting, when voters must go to a specific assigned precinct.
During the early voting period, you can:
Vote at a convenient location within your county.
Register and vote on the same day if you’re not yet registered — a process called same-day registration.
Update your registration information, such as your name or address, without missing your chance to cast a ballot.
These features are especially important for voters who may have work, school, or family obligations that make a single Election Day time window difficult to manage.
More Time, More Accessibility
For the upcoming 2026 primary election, North Carolina’s early in-person voting runs from Thursday, Feb. 12, through 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, ahead of Primary Election Day on Tuesday, March 3.
This extended window — and the ability to vote anywhere in your county — helps ease crowding at polling sites and gives voters the chance to make their voices heard when it’s most convenient for them. Local boards across the state also often offer expanded hours and additional weekend or evening hours to reach more voters.
Strengthening Democracy Through Participation
Early voting isn’t just about convenience — it’s about empowering more people to exercise a fundamental right. When communities vote early, turnout rises, and election administrators can better manage resources and reduce barriers at the polls. For Black voters and other historically underrepresented groups, increasing access through early voting and same-day registration has been a crucial part of expanding civic participation.
So whether you’re balancing work and family, navigating transportation challenges, or simply want to avoid long lines, early voting puts decision-making power in your hands — on your schedule.
