Every August, communities across the nation celebrate National Black Business Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the innovation, resilience, and economic impact of Black entrepreneurs. Established to encourage support for Black-owned businesses, the month also serves as a reminder of the vital role these enterprises play in strengthening local economies and creating opportunities for future generations.

According to 2024 data from the U.S. Small Business Administration, there are over 3.5 million Black-owned businesses in the United States, including approximately 201,000 employer businesses (firms with paid employees) and over 4.4 million non employer businesses (sole proprietorships). Black-owned businesses in the United States generate an estimated $249 billion in annual revenue according to data published by the Brookings Institution.

From neighborhood restaurants and retail shops to technology startups, healthcare providers, and professional service firms, Black-owned businesses continue to drive innovation while investing in the communities they serve. Beyond creating jobs, these businesses often reinvest locally, support community initiatives, and provide mentorship to aspiring entrepreneurs.

While these numbers may seem promising the racial wealth gap in the United States remains wide and persistent, with Black households holding roughly 15 cents for every dollar of wealth owned by white households. Data from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances shows that the median white household has a net worth of about $285,000, compared to roughly $44,900 for the median Black household, resulting in a median gap exceeding $240,000. Here's another interest 2024 article published by the Brookings Institution.

Again, despite this progress, many Black-owned businesses continue to face challenges, including limited access to capital, disparities in contracting opportunities, and barriers to long-term growth. National Black Business Month highlights the importance of addressing these challenges while encouraging consumers, corporations, and government agencies to intentionally support Black entrepreneurs year-round.

Supporting Black-owned businesses can take many forms, rather shopping locally, hiring Black-owned service providers, recommending businesses to friends and family, leaving positive online reviews, and sharing their stories through social media. These simple actions can help strengthen businesses and expand their reach.

As communities celebrate National Black Business Month, it is also an opportunity to recognize the vision, and determination of Black entrepreneurs who continue to build wealth, create jobs, and inspire the next generation of business leaders.

Throughout August, Substantial Media will spotlight Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs making a positive impact in their communities. Their stories serve as powerful examples of perseverance, innovation, and the enduring importance of supporting businesses that help move communities forward.
